2012 THSC Conference-- No Disappointment
Texas Home School Coalition Family Conference was no disappointment this weekend. Each year that I have gone (I believe this makes year number four) I come away with a renewed energy and sense of purpose in our home schooling goals. Several of my favorite speakers at the conference were, Dr. Voddie Baucham, Jr., Dr. Susan Wise Bauer, and Zan Tyler. Dr. Baucham takes such a direct, no-nonsense kind of approach, coupled with his natural humor, Waylon and I both got a lot out of his sessions. Dr. Bauer inspired me to make reading and self education a priority, and Zan Tyler's example of successfully home schooling her own children, and the stories she shared, made me feel renewed in my efforts to love and disciple my children. Waylon gained new ideas from the "Dad's only" session, and I enjoyed hearing his thoughts about the things he learned this weekend, on our journey home.
One refreshing thing about the weekend, was that Waylon and I made it a date weekend (this was our second year to do this) leaving the kids with Grandma, which was no disappointment for them-- but offered a nice, needed get away for us. Inspiring workshops, dining out, lazy hotel time, watching the Olympics, working out (I made it running 1.5 miles!Yahoo!), swimming, discussing political news, and on Saturday night enjoying a funny finale of a show by Bob Smiley-- local comedian. You can't beat Hubble & Hudson's hamburgers-- 100% Angus with freshly baked bun, and all the fixings-- topped off with a little mango habanero sauce---- YUM! That was our lunch excursion Saturday, with limited time to find a restaurant, we walked a block to shop and eat at H & H. We headed home on Sunday, finishing the weekend out by presenting Mom her birthday gift from my sisters and I (and our families), which was a charm bracelet by James Avery-- date engraved so that she can remember when she got the charms; which we plan to add to as the years go by. All-in-all it was a terrific weekend, and I feel very blessed, and encouraged!
