House Progress

Wednesday: Signed closing papers on the house. It's ours now, YEAH! Switched over the electric and water; mowed the lawn, picked up dead sticks, made a plan.

Thursday: Removed all of the old carpet. Removed other layers of floor in the dining room (wondering to ourselves "Where do these layers end?" LOL!).

Friday: Other obligations, no time to work.

Saturday: Waylon and his dad worked on tearing out the plastic walls in the kitchen/laundry room, followed by old sheet rock beneath, and then wall paper and cheese cloth. I helped removed old sheet rock, exposing original wood boards on the walls in the laundry room and kitchen. In the laundry room we discovered original outer house siding (also wood); the laundry room seems to have been added onto the house. I also tore out the down stairs bathroom floor (linoleum), followed by removing such things as metal shower parts, hand towel rack, curtain rods, blinds, shelving, and old trim that needs replacing. Found that there is a layer of ply wood in the bathroom, on top of another layer of linoleum which is hopefully on top of the original wood floor...

Sunday evening: Removed the sixth layer of floors in the dining room (top layer was carpet, followed by concrete tile, followed by ply wood, a layer of linoleum, another layer of linoleum squares, and black tar paper like stuff). Now we are down to the original wood floors. Also removed the felt-like carpet from the stairs, and removed more old sheet rock. We are making progress.

We have six weeks to get all of the potentially dangerous materials out of the house, and have it functional enough to move into. After that the plan is to take it one room at a time and give the house a "gentle" makeover. Which means we will be keeping and working with most of what is here, only doing away with old linoleum/tiled flooring, sheet rock walls, or paint which may contain asbestos or lead. Our goal is to keep as much of original wood as we can.
